MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin lawmakers are considering a bill that clarifies if residents can brew and serve beer or wine outside their home.

The state Assembly is scheduled to take up the bill Tuesday. The proposal specifies home brewers can make beer or wine outside their home, though they’re still prohibited from selling it.

The Senate passed the bill 32-1 in February. It requires approval in the Assembly before it can reach Gov. Scott Walker’s desk.

Current state law says homebrewed beer or wine cannot be taken outside of the home. It makes homemade brewing tasting events illegal.

It’s caused an outcry from homebrew enthusiasts around the state, who say the law is archaic. Several opposing groups say the proposed bill ignores state regulations on alcohol distribution.
