Beer Brewing 101 at library

The Tuscarawas County Public Library will welcome Nathan Mutschelknaus at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 1 to present a program on home beer brewing.

In this beginner-level program, the fundamental basics of brewing will be discussed, and it is intended to be a starting point for the home enthusiast.

“I’ll be discussing a wide range of topics, including the necessary equipment, ingredient list and steps required to successfully produce a quality beer within the confines of your home,”  said Mutschelknaus.

Debra Cahill, library reference assistant, said: “Brewing beer can be traced back 12,000 years, and was so important to the ancient Sumerians that they actually had a goddess of beer named Ninkasi.”

Home beer brewing has been part of American culture since Colonial days, and both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were homebrewers.

Today there are an estimated 1 million homebrewers in the United States. If you have an interest in pursuing this hobby, Mutschelknaus will be happy to answer questions to help get you started.

This free program will be held at the library’s main location at 121 Fair Ave NW in New Philadelphia. Please register by calling the library’s reference department at 330-364-4474, ext. 101.
